How to Perfect your Golf Swing Without Expensive Lessons

Written by golfer on Saturday, May 30th, 2009 in Golf.

How to Perfect your Golf Swing

The difference between a good golfer and a great golfer, can more often than not, be put down their golf swing. At championships you will notice that there are many good golfers but there are always few who at the top in every event, time after time. Why? Maybe the perfect golf swing…?

The perfect golf swing comes from several factors but the biggest is the angle from your body that your club head makes from the backswing right through until you have contact with the ball. Called the “golf swing plane” The swing plane should follow the same line on both the backswing and the swing its self.

A poor golf swing can rob you of:

Distance: Your shots just don’t make the distance; it could be up to 50 yards!

Accuracy: You go crazy with a lack of accuracy, you slice, and we have hooks, pulls, pushes – ouch!

Consistency: A lack of consistency (fat shots, topped shots, thin shots, toe/heel shots, sky shots, shanks etc, etc.)

So how can you close the distance between your game now and the game you would like to play? Is it curable, can you afford to fix the problem? How can you correct the angle you take?

Take lessons from a Golf Pro, buy the latest gadget? Sure you can go take a Golf Swing Lesson from a Golfing Pro and spend time on the driving range, or you can go and buy the very latest golf swing help device or a “golf swing trainer”.

The golf pro will stand back and watch the angle of swing on the way up in your backstroke and then watch the angle you take on the downward stroke. This information he will give you and try to help you correct the angle. After the lesson you will realise that it’s a lot harder to see from a distance than it is to feel your self actually doing it. You probably make some progress although not as much as you would like and golf is all about repeatability.

Maybe the latest gadget will help, but it will very probably end up in your closet!

Is there another way, a way that you can use and clearly see what you need to do to improve?

The answer is “YES”, if you have a 7-iron, a golf ball and a wall, then, yes there is, and it’s free! So OK, what is it, how do I do it?

Super Golf Swing Tips That Work For You Now

Written by golfer on Saturday, May 30th, 2009 in Golf.

Helen Hecker asked:

Even the guys who play golf for a living and get the best golf instruction in the world still struggle to improve their golf; and they practice each and every day! It’s important to remember, your golf swing is what drives your score; not your clubs or ball. You need great hand-eye coordination, balance, athletic ability and creativity to play golf.

It’s been proven that thinking positively about bettering your golf game will benefit you more than playing to compete with your partners and trying to win for winnings sake. Overall, you generally want to play golf with confidence. The positive energy you send out will influence your game, just as negative thinking and therefore negative energy will affect it also.

At the end of a swing, the weight has shifted almost entirely to the left foot, the body is fully turned to the left and the hands are above the left shoulder with the club hanging down over the players’ back.

The backswing is a rotation to the right, consisting of a shifting of the player’s body weight to the right side, a turning of the pelvis and shoulders, lifting of the arms and flexing of the elbows and wrists. Putts and short chips are ideally played without much movement of the body, but most other golf shots are played using variants of the full golf swing.

At the end of a backswing the hands are above the right shoulder, with the golf club pointing more or less in the intended direction of ball flight. After the ball is hit, the follow-through stage consists of a continued rotation to the left. Make sure to use the proper technique. It’s difficult for a golfer to practice hitting shots longer than short pitch shots unless one pays to play golf or pays to practice at a driving range or indoor golf training facility.

Putting can become a nightmare and a condition called the ‘yips’ has affected not only amateurs but professionals as well; get expert advice and consider a golf swing aid. When you swing if you have problems with your left knee buckling, imagine you’re holding a soccer ball between your knees.

Use the muscles in your legs and trunk when you swing. Accomplished golfers purposely use sidespin to steer their ball around obstacles or towards the safe side of fairways and greens. Most golfers don’t know there are techniques that will greatly affect swing mechanics; you can get an edge by just changing your approach.

Workouts with straight crunches won’t improve your swing or driving distance; concentrate on weighted rotational exercises instead. You can get rid of shoulder problems with some simple techniques.

Overall, investing in golf swing aids will greatly improve your golf swing and your golf game. If you’re a golfing novice just starting out, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Golf swing aids will improve your golf game.

Before buying any golf swing aid, check with an expert to get an idea of what problem you need to work on first; backlift of golf swing, momentum of downward thrust or stance for example. Golf magazines often review the newest golf swing aids and are reviewed by golfers, making it easy to choose the right one for you. There are a number of good golf swing aids on the market today.

Golf swing aids come in all shapes and sizes including apparel type accessories to correct alignment or a golf club add-on accessory to monitor your swing. Golf swing aids can be found online and are often cheaper. You can find golf swing aids that will help you with your wrist and arm position.

In any case, stick to just one golf swing aid at a time; don’t load up on them. If you’re looking for an aid to improve your stance they’re not hard to find.

If you’ve hit with your golf driver perfectly once, you can do it every time. Practice, practice, practice! Having a plan and working on specific aspects of the swing or game should be your goal.

Golf Swing Takeaway Tip

Written by golfer on Thursday, May 28th, 2009 in Golf.

John Lynch asked:

By John Lynch

I’ll never forget the time a few years ago when my brother in law Steve explained to me how he discovered a major break through in his golf swing. He describes this golf swing takeaway tip as “lightning in a bottle”…the true holy grail of golf!

Steve told me he had been sitting at an 8 handicap for about 4 years and was getting very frustrated at his lack of improvement. He practiced diligently however he had truly reached a plateau in his golf game.

He went through about 4 golf pros during this time and every one of them told him there was nothing wrong with his golf swing. Eventually he started playing less and less golf and was about ready to give it up altogether.

Steve said while on vacation with his family he was browsing through an old book store on Martha’s Vineyard when he came across a used copy of Joe Dante’s “Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf” written in 1972. He said he couldn’t put the book down so out of courtesy to the store owner he bought it.

Steve showed me the book and as I leafed through it I was amazed at all the beautifully drawn illustrations showing how to swing a golf club properly. Andy Brown has since revised this book for the 21st century and offers many media formats to read or listen to the book.

Steve turned to the chapter that explains “the early backward wrist break” and told me this one magic move has totally transformed his golf game! He went on to say how golf pros never tell you HOW to break the wrists during the backswing for whatever reason. Steve believes the first 18 inches of the backswing are the most critical.

Most golfers fan the clubface open early in the backswing causing them to swing the club way too much to the inside…this knocks the swing off plane early in the backswing. Golfers then usually spend the rest of the golf swing trying to adjust so they can just make contact with the ball…not a good recipe for success!

The book goes on to say there should be no open or closing of the clubface early in the backswing…if you correctly perform the early backward wrist break your swing will be on plane early in the swing…Steve says he feels like the club is swinging itself…a truly effortless swing!

I am happy to say that my brother in law Steve is now a scratch golfer, thanks to this one magic move that has transformed his golf game!

When you make the backward wrist break perfectly – only one knuckle of your left hand (right handed golfers) and two knuckles of your right hand should be visible and the golf club should be parallel to your target line.

You pay a lot of money to play this great game of golf…so why not enjoy it more by playing the golf you are capable of?

Try this golf swing takeaway tip and build the early backward wrist break into your golf swing and I promise you will halve your handicap in 2 weeks!

What type of golf clubs does a beginner need for a round of golf?

Written by golfer on Thursday, May 28th, 2009 in Golf.

GRUMP asked:

I just finished up a golf class last week put on by ESPN in which they gave you a set of Nike Ignite clubs to get started, namely; 4-9 irons, pw, 3-hybrid and a putter. I added a cheap driver (which I’m planning on upgrading to a Nike Summo) and a Wilson 58 deg sand wedge as well. I have played the past two months with this set and feel that I may need more fairway clubs especially for the 5 pars. I’m getting mixed up between some saying I need a 3 and a 5 wood while others say I need 5, 7 and 9 wood. As well, I’m mixed up whether I should get hybrids (like the #3 that I have) to take the place of the woods. Does anyone have suggestions on what I should get to complete my set? BTW, I do like wedges and would like to add either a LW or a GW to my set. Thanks!

Golf Swing Improvement – Super Tips That Work For Your Golf Swing Now

Written by golfer on Thursday, May 28th, 2009 in Golf.

Helen Hecker asked:

It’s important to remember, your golf swing is what drives your score; not your clubs or ball. Most golfers don’t know that eighty percent of the world’s golfers have a handicap of 18 or more. When you’re playing golf badly it isn’t a lot of fun.

Overall, you generally want to play golf with confidence. If you’ve hit with your golf driver perfectly once, you can do it every time; the subconscious mind knows the correct number and sequence of muscle contractions and nerve impulses needed, called muscle memory. Visualize where you would like the ball to land, as you swing.

As the body matures, the ability to rotate the upper torso is affected by age, and the hand action can also slow down requiring a slightly stronger grip. Make sure to use the proper technique. At the end of a swing, the weight has shifted almost entirely to the left foot, the body is fully turned to the left and the hands are above the left shoulder with the club hanging down over the players’ back.

Standing over the ball for too long a time and wondering whether you’re going to swing the club correctly can easily result in a skewed shot, or completely missing the ball. Use the muscles in your legs and trunk when you swing. Putting can become a nightmare and a condition called the ‘yips’ has affected not only amateurs but professionals as well; get expert advice and consider a golf swing aid.

Before you swing, make sure you’re relaxed; contract all your muscles tightly for a moment and then relax them. After the ball is hit, the follow-through stage consists of a continued rotation to the left. Ask your golf pro to evaluate your posture while swinging. Swing slowly and steadily using a nice rhythm. Use the basic ‘hitchhiker’ position when you’re working on your backswing.

It’s no secret; most of the professional players actively participate in workouts. You can get rid of shoulder problems with some simple techniques. Don’t underestimate the value of fitness when it comes to your golf swing and your overall golf game.

Keep in mind that with some golf swing aids, you may still need advice or help from an expert. Overall, investing in aids will greatly improve your golf swing and your golf game. There are aids that will help you with swing alignment.

Look for golf swing aids at your local golf course. You can find aids that will help you with your wrist and arm position. There are golf swing aids that act as driving range simulators.

Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just starting out, pick just one aid and go to work on your swing. Golf swing aids come in all shapes and sizes including apparel type accessories to correct alignment or a golf club add-on accessory to monitor your swing. Before buying any aid, check with an expert to get an idea of what problem you need to work on first; backlift, momentum of downward thrust or stance for example.

If you’re looking for an aid to improve your stance they’re not hard to find. In any case, stick to just one aid at a time; don’t load up on them.

When you play a round of golf, concentrate on improving your swing, putting or something specific that day; have a plan in mind. If you’ve hit with your golf driver perfectly once, you can do it every time. Now is the time to fix that golf swing forever.

How to Keep Left Arm Straight During Golf Swing

Written by golfer on Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 in Golf.

John Lynch asked:

By John Lynch

You’ve been hearing it since you first learned how to swing a golf club – “you gotta keep your left arm straight during the golf swing”.

The trouble is; how do you learn to keep your left arm straight?

A lotta golfers who think they keep their left arm straight during the golf swing are shocked when they see themselves swing on video…their left elbow usually breaks down somewhere during the backswing…or the downswing.

Some golfers are so intent on keeping their left arm straight during the golf swing they become rigid with little shoulder turn.

So, how do you learn to keep the left arm straight during the golf swing?

First, a little lesson on the physics of the golf swing

Experts on the physics of golf refer to the “Magic Triangle” or “Eternal Triangle” that is formed in an ideal golf swing. This is the triangle formed by the golfer’s left arm, the golf club, and an imaginary line from the golfer’s left shoulder to the center of the club face. For best results, this triangle should be maintained from the start of the backswing to just before the impact area when you release the club head. This will produce a high speed impact with the ball as described in detail by Joe Dante in his top selling golf instructional book – “Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf”.

By focusing on maintaining the magic triangle throughout the golf swing you are taken advantage of a powerful physical force…the conservation of angular momentum…the principal that states angular momentum of an object remains constant as long as no external force or moment acts on that object.

If the object (club head) is brought closer to the axis (formed by the golfer’s stable spine), it speeds up. If the club head is moved further out, it slows down. In a golf swing, as the player rotates the club, the hands move farther from the body or axis and slow down. This reduction in momentum feeds into the much lighter club and increases the speed of the club head in the last part of the stroke, in a whiplash type of effect, increasing the force of impact on the ball.

The truth is, if your left arm does not stay straight during the golf swing, you are losing out on the benefits of centrifugal force because your swing arc is smaller. Think of your left arm as a spoke in a wheel and your swing arc as the circumference of the wheel. By not keeping your left arm straight you are essentially shortening the spoke thereby reducing the circumference. You are also upsetting the positive effects of conservation of angular momentum and thus reducing the speed between club face and ball.

Now that you understand the physics behind the benefits of keeping your left arm straight during the golf swing

How do you learn to do so?

Assuming your golf swing fundamentals such as grip, stance, and alignment are relatively sound, all you have to do is simply become aware of this magic triangle. Don’t try to force this triangle…just become aware of it next time you go to the range…

Then, just before impact, release all that stored energy you will have in the club head, like cracking a whip!

After a while you will be shocked at how solidly you can strike the ball…

You’ll be surprised how straight your left arm becomes during the golf swing just by shining the light of awareness upon this magic triangle during the golf swing.

You will now have a tiger by the tail so use this new found power wisely!

Hit ‘em Long and Straight!

A Super Golf Swing – How To Get It

Written by golfer on Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 in Golf.

Helen Hecker asked:

It’s important to remember, your golf swing is what drives your score; not your clubs or ball. You may receive all the greatest golf tips in the world, take countless lessons and get superior instruction and still may not be able to gain consistency. As we all know, golf is probably the most difficult sport in the world.

Don’t worry about what others think or may say about your swing; work to improve it at your own speed. A common mental error golfers make when driving the ball is to hit it as hard as possible. Overall, you generally want to play golf with confidence.

It’s difficult for a golfer to practice hitting shots longer than short pitch shots unless one pays to play golf or pays to practice at a driving range or indoor golf training facility.

Standing over the ball for too long a time and wondering whether you’re going to swing the club correctly can easily result in a skewed shot, or completely missing the ball. One of the problems that most inexperienced golfers share is they think too much about their swing.

Ask your golf pro to evaluate your posture while swinging. The most important thing about the golf swing is the angle and not the strength that’s applied to it. When you swing if you have problems with your left knee buckling, imagine you’re holding a soccer ball between your knees.

Accomplished golfers purposely use sidespin to steer their ball around obstacles or towards the safe side of fairways and greens. Use the basic ‘hitchhiker’ position when you’re working on your backswing. The backswing is a rotation to the right, consisting of a shifting of the player’s body weight to the right side, a turning of the pelvis and shoulders, lifting of the arms and flexing of the elbows and wrists.

Trust your golf club to do the job it was intended to do. Putting can become a nightmare and a condition called the ‘yips’ has affected not only amateurs but professionals as well; get expert advice and consider a golf swing aid.

It’s no secret; most of the professional players actively participate in workouts. Many golfers have improved their golf game by concentrating on golf fitness. The state of the physical condition is very often overlooked as a possible cause of golf swing problems.

If you’re looking for an aid to improve your stance they’re not hard to find. Sporting goods stores have golf aids to improve your game. Look for golf swing aids at your local golf course.

Be careful about the claims on TV commercials and magazine ads; seek expert advice before you buy because they may not live up to their claims. Overall, investing in golf swing aids will greatly improve your swing and your golf game. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just starting out, pick just one aid and go to work on your swing.

Most of all don’t waste your money on a golf swing aid you don’t need or will never use. In any case, stick to just one golf swing aid at a time; don’t load up on them. Aids come in all shapes and sizes including apparel type accessories to correct alignment or a golf club add-on accessory to monitor your swing.

Aids will improve your golf game. There are aids that will help you with swing alignment.

If you apply both physical and mental workouts, golf swing improvement will be your reward. Try to concentrate on one weakness at time. With plenty of practice, a better golf swing will be the end result.
