Golf Swing Instruction

Written by golfer on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 in Golf.

Jay Bose asked:

Right or wrong, these are some of my thoughts about the basic golf swing.

My goal is to present an easy golf swing at it’s most basic level. I’ll also list some things that I think are myths. Think of this as the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) golf swing.

Learn to crawl here and then you can go for the next level. Are you ready?

Relax! A good Golf Swing Setup is just not that tough! The good news is that you probably have a good athletic golf swing setup and all you need is to brush it up and be more relaxed.

You can can choose from three different Golf Grips. It’s your choice and you should choose the golf grip that feels right for you.

An athletic Golf Stance and golf swing setup is the launching pad for your swing. If you start with a bad stance, you’ll probably follow with a bad back swing, a bad downswing, and a bad follow through. Not to worry though. It’s just not that difficult!

Solid basic Golf Swing Steps or golf swing mechanics lead to an easy golf back swing, down swing, and follow through.

The Golf Back Swing – Don\’t think about your arms. Instead of thinking about my arms and swinging my golf club , I try to think of my back swing as turning my back to the target. I’m just putting the golf club behind my back.

My best advice for your Golf Down Swing, with one exception, is to just let it happen! The down swing and follow through should be the very natural result of everything that precedes it.

Golf Swing Summary – I DO still remember the faulty golf swing mechanics and neurotic golf swing thoughts that result in that less than memorable worm burner shot or that weak 70 yard shot off to the right. Here’s my list of golf swing killers.

What little I know about the golf swing is already on these pages, but I’ll be glad to provide whatever Swing Tip Support I can. I\’m no expert, and everything I\’ve done here is probably incorrect according every golf aficionado on the planet. But then again, if it works, do you really care?

What type of golf ball responds best on the green?

Written by golfer on Monday, May 25th, 2009 in Golf.

Dan W asked:

Although hard to believe, I compete in Professional MIni Golf tournaments around the country and was wondering what type of ball would perform best on the green (min golf course lol). I seem to like balls with a lower compression (Maxfli Noodle, Volvik Crystal) yet after reading up on the design of golf balls, I am not sure that this is the right decision. What type of balls (compression, three piece two piece etc.) would help increase my performance.

How to Improve Your Golf Swing Instantly

Written by golfer on Monday, May 25th, 2009 in Art And Entertainment.

Michael Potter asked:

Do you want to experience what it feels like to play golf like Tiger Woods? The answer to this question will be determined solely based on one’s golf swing.

Every golf player has a different swinging talent of his own. However, one has to learn first how to properly swing his golf club. There are many books available in the market that will help you understand the proper way of handling and swinging a golf club. This will help you improve your golf swing in a dramatic manner. As such, here are some tips on how to improve one’s golf swing.

First, always remember that good swinging is not just attributed to the wrist. The whole body must be used in order to achieve that perfect swing. When swinging, one must use his legs, trunk, arms and wrist to complete the ideal swinging motion. The parts of the body mentioned will increase the strength of one’s swing and at the same time create a graceful posture.

Second, swing in a comfortable manner. Do not just swing with all the power you got. Golf is not just about power, if that is otherwise, then many people will be treated as golf masters. It is important that every swing must be done in a graceful manner. To do this, one must be comfortable in the way he swings, and then, proper posture will follow.

Third, keep in mind that your stance must be firm. The ideal stance is putting both feet flat on the floor and the distance of a foot from the other should be about one shoulder width apart. Upon hitting the ball, that is the only time when your stance will change in order to maximize the strength of the impact. But before that impact it is important that your feet are nailed to the ground and that you are stable.

Fourth, relax when swinging your golf club. A golf swing should not in anyway be rushed. Remember to breathe normally and do not let a golf game give you a heart attack. Playing golf is about having fun. Do not stress yourself so much in driving the golf ball. Playing golf is like driving a car, at first, you are very tense to drive because you are afraid that you might sideswipe another car or a person, but as time passes, you begin to drive at ease and no longer afraid of bumping another. Just play the game properly and the next thing you know, you are doing it perfectly.

Finally, practice is very important in order to improve one’s golf swing. Books and commercial swing trainer are useless unless you practice your golf swing. Try to master first the proper posture before swinging any golf club. Next is to practice swinging properly before hitting any golf ball. Make sure that your style of swinging looks good and that it suits your body type. As stated a while ago, one must be comfortable in doing a golf swing. Before jumping to an 18-hole golf course, practice hitting golf balls first. There are golf courses that offer a spot to practice.

When all these steps are complete, that is the only time to play in a real golf course. In doing so, do not be frustrated if your score is very low.

The Best Start With Beginner Golf Swing Instruction

Written by golfer on Sunday, May 24th, 2009 in Extreme Sports.

Steve A Madigan asked:

Coming from someone who has been playing golf for over 40 years, if you are thinking about starting to take up the game start with some tips for beginner golfers. A beginner golf swing instruction set of lessons if probably the best thing that you could do. This will not only give you some confidence, but will also help you to improve your golf score right off the bat. Now there are many things that you can do to improve your golf game or even take away from your game, but speaking from experience, a good swing will usually produce some good results.

Have Good Balance is a Great Tip for Beginner Golfers

Getting the right tips for beginner golfers, is going to make the game much easier. Now whether you are trying to hit a drive off the tee or a fairway iron, having a comfortable and confident swing can help. As mentioned before there are many different aspects to playing golf well. One key is to have good balance. Taking the club head back with good balance and then delivering the club head on the ball on the downswing with good balance will produce a fine golf shot. If you try to hit the ball like you are chopping a piece of firewood is not going to produce any type of result that you want.

When taking a golf swing as a beginner is sometimes a difficult thing to do. Having a smooth transition at the top of the swing with smooth rhythm is going to produce the swing that you want. Having smooth transition will help to deliver the club with good club head speed at impact. For the beginner golf swing, instruction can teach them the correct stance and grip, the balance that is needed to hit the ball straight and very long, depending on the club that you are using.

Beginner Guide to Golf, Keep the Golf Swing Simple

When trying to hit a golf ball, you are going to find that it is a lot of hand and eye coordination. Having good hand/eye coordination allows the golfer to strike the ball at the right moment at the bottom of the golf swing. What will happen over time is that each golfer is going to find a swing that is comfortable for them. When they find this swing that is when their game is really going to start to improve.

If you watch professional golfers, you will see that not all swings are the same. They have found a swing that is comfortable and repeatable for them and that is what they have developed. When you are getting beginner golf swing instruction, they teach you how to square the club at impact. This will help you to avoid hooking the ball or slicing the ball. Now what you do see in all professional golfers is that they all have fantastic balance taking the club back as well as great balance while delivering the club head on the golf ball. When you watch their follow thru swing, they are in perfect balance. So you want some tips for beginner golfers, then practice your balance through the golf swing.

Maintaining good balance and having good fundamentals thru the golf swing is going to help eliminate your frustration and aggravation time on the course. This will allow you more time on the fairways and greens, rather than spending most of your time in the woods or rough looking for your lost golf ball. This will also make the game nice for the group that is playing behind you. There is nothing worse than playing behind a group of beginner golfers, who have never practiced anything, and really have no business on the golf course. They should be spending there time on the range practicing their swing and finding that balance point. Now if they don’t hold anybody up, well then I guess it is ok.

So now you have some tips for beginner golfers to help you enjoy yourself more and have some fun with this great game that is called golf. If you are looking for more great beginner golf tips visit: http://www.puttlightsout.com

Improve Your Golf Swing The Easy Way

Written by golfer on Sunday, May 24th, 2009 in Golf.

Helen Hecker asked:

Most golfers aren’t aware of the fact that eighty percent of the world’s golfers have a handicap of 18 or more. Finding ways to improve your golf game, then applying what you’ve learned and practicing diligently, is the best way to get ahead of the game. Did you know the average golfer’s gross score is 107 shots?

Don’t worry about what others think or may say about your swing; work to improve it at your own speed. A common mental error golfers make when driving the ball is to hit it as hard as possible. Approach the game with a positive attitude and repeat affirmations if you can, such as “I play great golf all the time.”

It’s difficult for a golfer to practice hitting shots longer than short pitch shots unless one pays to play golf or pays to practice at a driving range or indoor golf training facility. Putts and short chips are ideally played without much movement of the body, but most other golf shots are played using variants of the full golf swing. Sidespin occurs when the clubface is not aligned perpendicularly to the plane of swing.

Trust your golf club to do the job it was intended to do. At the end of a swing, the weight has shifted almost entirely to the left foot, the body is fully turned to the left and the hands are above the left shoulder with the club hanging down over the players’ back. The backswing is a rotation to the right, consisting of a shifting of the player’s body weight to the right side, a turning of the pelvis and shoulders, lifting of the arms and flexing of the elbows and wrists.

Many golfers who are strongly left-handed in their daily life prefer the right-handed golf swing. Try not to grip the club too tightly. Swing slowly and steadily using a nice rhythm. Use the basic ‘hitchhiker’ position when you’re working on your backswing. The most important thing about the golf swing is the angle and not the strength that’s applied to it.

Golf workouts will change your game forever. Conditioning your golf muscles will reward you with straighter swings. It’s no secret; most of the professional players actively participate in workouts.

If you’re a golfing novice just starting out, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. In any case, stick to just one golf swing aid at a time; don’t load up on them. Golf aids are often for sale at your pro shop or local golf shop.

Keep in mind that with some aids, you may still need advice or help from an expert. There are a number of good golf swing aids on the market today. Sporting goods stores have aids to improve your game.

Golf swing aids can be found online and are often cheaper. Aids come in all shapes and sizes including apparel type accessories to correct alignment or a golf club add-on accessory to monitor your swing. Look for golf swing aids at your local golf course.

There are aids that will help you with swing alignment. Ask an expert, who is not associated with the shop you would buy your golf swing aid from, for advice on the right aid for you.

If you apply both physical and mental workouts, golf swing improvement will be your reward. When you play a round of golf, concentrate on improving your golf swing, putting or something specific that day; have a plan in mind. Invest in a few of the newest golf books and golf ebooks; older golf books may be outdated.

Improve Your Golf Swing And Driving Distance With Golf Stretches

Written by golfer on Sunday, May 24th, 2009 in Golf.

Sean Cochran asked:

The golf swing is arguably one of the most difficult athletic actions to perform. The golf swing requires you to draw the golf club through a long range of motion with proper technique and exact timing.

Any error in swing plane, timing, or sequence will cause your golf swing to suffer, and suffer it will. Unfortunately, the result of your golf swing suffering will be errant shots, poor golf scores, and frustration on the golf course.

Often the amateur is at a lost for why their golf swing results in errant shots. Countless hours are spent at the range in an effort to improve their golf swing. Hundreds or even thousands of dollars are spent on lessons each year, and not to mention the purchasing of new equipment.

It all adds up to a lot of time and money spent on improving the golf swing. Unfortunately, for many amateur golfers their handicaps and score never improve. Leading to the question “why is my golf game not improving?”

If this is you and this question lingers in your mind. The answer to your question could easily be staring right back at you in the mirror. The failure of improvement may have absolutely nothing to do with the driver you are swinging, the teaching pro helping you with your swing, or even your practice routine. It could all do with you! Yes you, the physical body swinging the golf club.

Keep in mind the golf club does not perform the mechanics of the golf swing. Nor do the mechanics of the golf swing execute themselves without you. It is you and your body executing the mechanics of the golf swing. The point to make is your body directly affects the mechanics of the golf swing.

Additionally, the golf swing requires your body to encompass certain physical qualities to execute the mechanics of the golf swing correctly. These physical qualities are certain levels of flexibility, muscular strength, balance, and power. If you are lacking the minimal amounts of flexibility, balance, strength, and power to execute the golf swing correctly. Compensations will occur even before you swing the golf club.

For example, let’s look at your flexibility. The golf swing requires you to draw the golf club through a large range of motion. The backswing requires a full shoulder turn to set the club in the correct slot for the downswing, and the finish position is almost a mirror image of the backswing.

In order to perform these parts of the golf swing correctly, the muscles of your body must be flexible. An inflexible body in which muscles are “tight” creates restrictions in movement. Restrictions in movement in relation to the golf swing will undoubtedly result in limitations pertaining to golf swing. The limitation will impede you from creating a full shoulder turn and balanced finish position. This causes compensations in the mechanics of the golf swing.

The entire body needs to be flexible for the golf swing. Certain muscles more than others are involved in the golf swing, and if these muscles are “tight” they will directly affect your golf swing. One such set of muscles is your hamstrings.

The hamstrings (back side of your upper leg) are often “tight” and cause problems to many people, not just golfers. However, they have a profound effect on the golf swing and it is not a good effect. Hamstrings that are “tight” are in a shortened position. The shortened position of the hamstrings has a direct effect on the position of your hips. Your hips will be “tucked”, directly affecting your posture. This in itself can hamper the ability to place oneself in the correct position at address within the golf swing, not to mention maintaining a proper spine angle during the swing.

Additionally, “tight” hamstrings place an undo amount of stress on the lower back. Large amounts of stress on the lower back cause fatigue, soreness, and increase the possibility of injury. If you are a golfer that has ever experienced lower back pain you know the effect it has on your ability to swing the golf club correctly.

A combination of a postural change and undo amounts of stress on the lower back, just begin to scratch the surface of the effect inflexible muscles can have on the golf swing. “Tight” muscles change the kinematics of the body. As a result, the biomechanics of the golf swing must be altered. These alterations usually lead to compensations in the mechanics of the golf swing resulting in errant shot patterns on the golf course.

And no matter what you do in terms of practice or instruction these alterations will not go away until you address them. Just as you address swing faults, you must address flexibility faults. Flexibility faults can be addressed through golf stretches.

Golf stretches enhance the flexibility of your body in relation to the golf swing. Golf stretches often times return muscles that are “tight” such as the hamstrings to their proper length. This results in the ability of your body to perform the biomechanics of the golf swing correctly. If you are one of many golfers who are not finding their golf swing improving through practice and instruction. Take a moment and look at the body swinging the golf club. This very well may be the root of your golf swing problems. Fix your flexibility faults through golf stretches and find yourself on the road to lower golf scores and more enjoyment in the game of golf.

Ways to Increase the Power of Your Golf Swing

Written by golfer on Sunday, May 24th, 2009 in Hobbies.

Scott Cole asked:

Copyright (c) 2009 Scott Cole

Let’s face it, nearly every golfer wants to add distance to their tee shots, and there is a whole host of marketers who want to sell you the latest driver, the newest training aid, or the newest exercise to help you gain that extra 20 yards you so desire. Here are the key strategies to gain extra distance of the tee.

1. Improve your golf swing! I developed my golf fitness website because I noticed the need to debunk some of the information being put out there by so-called golf fitness gurus and even the golf profession overall. You can NOT gain distance off the tee just by lifting weights or doing any “golf-specific” exercises if you have a significantly flawed swing! Sure, you may increase your swing speed, but that will only make the ball curve further off-line!

For instance, if you have the classic over-the-top golf swing that results in a slice, right there you are limiting your ability to hit the ball further. And, learning a new stretch or exercise will NOT solve this problem!

A hook will always go further than a slice. Learn how to hook the ball by correcting this major swing flaw, and I guarantee you will add yards right away. That is just one example, but the point is to look at ways to improve your golf swing first. If you are able to strike the ball more solidly, you will see an immediate increase in your driving distance!

2. Ok, let’s say you do actually have a decent golf swing, but you want to add some yards. What should you do now? Join a gym with the goal of being able to bench press 300 pounds? No, absolutely not. The best way to increase your distance off the tee, if you have a decent swing already, is to improve your flexibility, especially with your shoulders and your trunk. This will allow you to make a fuller shoulder turn. A fuller shoulder turn will help you to widen the arc of your swing, a key component to hitting it long.

This is especially true with older players. As we watch our golf heroes age, they tend to lose flexibility and their swings get shorter and shorter. Arnold Palmer is a clear example of this. If he had focused a bit more on his fitness and flexibility at a younger age, he could have a longer swing than he has now. We can’t eliminate all of the issues that come with aging, but we can sure hold them off as long as we can.

With that in mind, get yourself on a stretching program. You can learn a few key stretching exercises that you can do from home in 15 to 20 minutes. Stretching should be done every other day. The hamstrings, back and shoulders are what require the most attention.

3. If you’ve significantly improved your flexibility, now you can consider ways to increase the power of your golf swing through strength training. Although I believe in developing a balanced, strength training program which will exercise all of the major body parts, you should evaluate your body and identify the weaknesses first.

First and foremost, the most important muscle group for generating power is your legs. The legs are the foundation for the golf swing, and if they are weak, you will not be able to maximize your power. Now, this does not mean you need to be able to squat 500 pounds! I suggest you learn some classic martial arts stances that are meant to increase strength while improving balance. These can be done in the comfort of your own home with no equipment necessary.

After the legs, probably the next most important muscle group is the upper back and shoulders. I have probably benefited significantly from having strong shoulders as a result of my 10 years as a competitive swimmer when I was a kid. Over the years, I have continued to be sure to maintain strength in these areas. Simple pull ups and a set of dumbbells are all you need to work on these areas. Want to increase their strength and work on some cardio at the same time, a rowing machine might be a good investment.

Finally, work on your core strength as well as your arms. Keep this in mind though, you do not need huge arms to add greater distance, and increasing your core strength will not do much either. However, conditioning these areas is important mainly to help avoid injury.

4. Alright, you’ve got a pretty good golf swing, you’ve increased your flexibility, and improved on the strength of your body. What else is there!? Well, this is where some more advanced golf swing techniques come into play.

You can have a picture perfect golf swing, but there is a swing sequence that will allow you to increase your golf swing speed significantly at impact. This technique is what some refer to as “cracking the whip” or “lagging the hands. All of the big hitters on tour have one thing in common….they start the downswing with their lower body BEFORE their backswing is completed. This causes the arms to lag the lower body, causing that whiplash effect that dramatically increases swing speed right at impact.

Many amateur golfers are so concerned with being in the right position at the top of the backswing that they wait too long to get the downswing started with the lower body, and they lose all the stored up power that results from the coiling of the back swing. If you can get this timing down, you will see a dramatic increase in your driving distance.

One other minor flaw in the golf swing of many amateurs is the lack of wrist action in their golf swings. Most are concerned with hitting the ball straight so they try very hard to limit the action in their hands. This actually defeats that purpose and can result in a greater slice, if that is their typical ball flight. What they really need to do is let the natural rotation of the forearms occur at the bottom of the golf swing when impact occurs.

Keep this example in mind. Remember Kirk Gibson’s home run to win the game for the Dodgers in their World Series against the A’s? He had no power in his legs due to bad knees. Yet, just by using his hands, he was able to generate enough bat speed to hit that ball out of the park. Wade Boggs, renowned for being a line drive hitter, was said to be able to hit balls out of the park at will during batting practice since he had such great hands.

Among golfers, Chi Chi Rodriguez is an example of a player with a wristy golf swing that allowed him to hit the ball pretty far for a guy who weighed under 150 pounds.

Learn to incorporate the hands and wrists better in your golf swing, and you will be able to generate more power.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that there are a variety of ways to improve the power of your golf swing through golf strength training and fitness. However, you must first improve your golf swing in order to generate more power. If you are able to develop a sound golf swing, the possibilities become endless.
